For a long time, I lived my life on autopilot.
If you asked me three years ago where I saw myself in five years, I would have probably described a version of my current life: comfortable, safe, but ultimately stagnant. I was living by inertia. I was waking up, going through the motions, and falling asleep only to repeat the same cycle the next day. I wasn’t unhappy, but I wasn’t alive. I was just waiting—waiting for a sign, waiting for a “better time,” waiting for a miracle that would somehow transport me to the life I actually wanted.
That life has always been in Japan.
Since I was young, Japan wasn’t just a travel destination for me; it was a symbol of a different way of being. I spent countless hours watching YouTube videos of people walking through the neon-soaked streets of Shinjuku or the quiet, moss-covered temples of Kyoto. I followed creators who shared their daily lives as expats, watching them navigate convenience stores and language schools. I was a professional spectator of other people’s courage.
But this year, something shifted. The inertia finally broke.

The Breaking Point
They say change happens when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the fear of the unknown. That is exactly what happened to me. I looked at the people I was following online—people who started with nothing but a dream and a camera—and I saw them reaching their goals. I saw them landing at Narita Airport, finding their first apartments in Tokyo, and speaking the language I had only ever listened to in anime.
A realization hit me like a lightning bolt: Why them and not me? The answer was simple and painful: they had a plan, and I only had a wish. They chose to stop being spectators and started being the protagonists of their own stories. I realized that if I didn’t make a radical move now, I would wake up in ten years still sitting in the same chair, still watching the same videos, still wondering “what if.”
I decided that I couldn’t go on like this. I decided that 2026 would be my year of transition. My goal is no longer just a vague “someday.” My goal is to close every door behind me in Italy and land in Japan by December 2026, so I can wake up on January 1st, 2027, as a resident of the country I love.
Building the Bridge: The 360-Degree Online Strategy
To make this happen, I knew I needed more than just a plane ticket. I needed freedom. I needed to break the chains of a traditional 9-to-5 that kept me tethered to one location. I needed to build a bridge made of digital bricks.
This is why I am going all-in on my online presence. This blog, Explore Japan, is the first pillar of that bridge. It isn’t just a collection of travel tips; it is my accountability partner. By writing here, by aiming for 1,000 words every post, I am documenting my growth, my struggles, and my research. It forces me to stay disciplined.
The second pillar is TikTok. I realized that to succeed in the digital world of 2026, you need 360-degree visibility. While the blog allows for deep dives and long-form storytelling, TikTok allows me to connect with a global community in real-time. It’s where I show the “aesthetic” side of the dream, but also the raw reality of my study sessions. When I saw my first video hit 1,000 views, it wasn’t just about the number; it was proof that there are thousands of people out there who resonate with this journey.
The Secret Engine
However, the blog and TikTok are only the visible parts of the iceberg. Behind the scenes, I am working on a third project—a secret venture that I am not quite ready to reveal yet.
Building a life abroad requires financial stability, and I am currently pouring my nights and weekends into a specific online business model that will provide the backbone of my relocation fund. Keeping it private for now gives me the space to fail, iterate, and perfect it without the pressure of outside opinions. But know this: every hour I spend away from the camera is spent building this “hidden” engine.
The plan is to scale these three areas—the blog, the social media presence, and the secret project—to a point where my income is 100% location-independent. I am not just moving to Japan to be a tourist; I am moving there to live a sustainable, free life.
The 12-Month Countdown
The clock is ticking. Between now and December, I have a mountain to climb.
Financial Independence: I need my online income to reach a fixed, reliable monthly target. This is my “escape velocity.”
The Language Barrier: As I wrote in my previous post, I’ve pivoted to Hey Japan and Memrise. I need to move from “Hello” to “I can navigate a bank account and a lease.”
Bureaucracy: I need to research vists, schools, and the logistics of moving a life across the world.
Mental Preparation: Leaving everything you know is terrifying. I am spending this year becoming the person who is brave enough to do it.
The Cost of Doing Nothing
If I look back at the last few years, I can see a slow, silent fading. I used to think that the greatest risk in life was taking a leap and failing, but I was wrong. The greatest risk is standing still.
For a long time, I felt like a candle burning out. I reached a point where I was doing things—working, eating, talking—without actually wanting to do them. It’s a terrifying realization when you wake up and notice that you’ve lost your spark, that you have no more stimuli, and that your days have become a gray blur of “have-tos” instead of “want-tos.”
To be completely honest, that is exactly where I am right now. I am in that uncomfortable space where the desire to do anything is gone, replaced by a heavy sense of obligation. I do things, but my heart isn’t in them. I’m moving, but I’m not going anywhere.
This is the “Cost of Doing Nothing.” If I don’t make this move to Japan, if I don’t build this online business, I know exactly what will happen: I will keep fading until there is nothing left of the original Nikki. I refuse to let that happen.
This countdown to December 2026 isn’t just about moving to a beautiful country; it’s about saving my own life. It’s about finding a reason to feel excited when I open my eyes in the morning. Building this “escape plan” through my blog, my TikTok, and my secret project is the only thing giving me back my spark. Every follower, every 922-view milestone, and every Japanese character I learn is a reminder that I am still here, and I am fighting to come back to life.
A Message to My Fellow Spectators
If you are reading this and you feel that same sense of inertia—that feeling of being a passenger in your own life—I want you to know that the “switch” is within your reach.
You don’t need a perfect 10-year plan. You just need to decide that you cannot go on as you are. For me, that meant choosing a date: December 2026. It meant choosing a destination: Japan. And it meant starting a blog and a TikTok account to prove to myself that I am no longer just watching.
The journey from zero to Tokyo is going to be messy. I will have days where my “secret project” feels like a failure, days where Hiragana looks like gibberish, and days where the 9-to-5 feels easier than the hustle. But I will not go back to the autopilot.
I’m closing the door on the old version of me. On January 1st, 2027, I want to stand under the winter sun in Tokyo and know that I didn’t just get lucky—I worked, I pivoted, and I built the life I was meant to live.
Are you still watching, or are you ready to start your own countdown?
I’m building this ‘bridge to Japan’ day by day. If you find value in my story and want to support the blog and the secret projects behind it, please know that every coffee donated will bring me one step closer to my dream of moving to Japan.
